The workshop’s main goal was to present Animal Assisted Intervention, mostly with dogs, as an efficient and helpful tool to work with hospital patients. Research proves that AAI could be beneficial in many cases and can shorten the time needed to recover in adults and children.
The Italian partners followed with great interest the activities carried out on campus and within the hospitals visited, also actively participating.
They have greatly enriched the knowledge on the AAI promising to further deepen the skills, also through a subsequent collaboration with the Polish partner, which proved to be very fruitful. The works were interspersed with cultural visits in which the beauties of the city of Warsaw and its surroundings were greatly appreciated.
But let us come in detail to the description of the mobility days

First day
The first day was dedicated to knowing the method better. The workshop was in the International Animal Assisted Intervention training camp, organized by Stowarzyszenie Zwierzęta Ludziom.

During the camp, 40 teams from different European countries train together to get the international AAI certification. The Italian partner participated in pieces of dog training and could observe different AAI teams.
Second day
That was a brilliant opportunity to discuss goals for AAI and dog welfare issues: how to select, prepare and train the dog before letting it work in the hospital. The possibility of observing teams from different countries and then discussing the training with dog handlers and instructors was very beneficial.

Third day
The third day, as it was Sunday, was free time to do some sightseeing in Warsaw.
Then, the Partners observed 2 interventions with dogs in the Rehabilitation ward. The intervention was dedicated to children who need medical rehabilitation and must stay in the hospital for several weeks. The first group was small children (aged 1-13).
Fourth day
On Monday, Partners visited the children’s hospital – Poland’s biggest and most modern facility. The hospital has almost every pediatric care specialty and gathers specialized doctors from all over the country. Instytut-Pomnik Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka is also one of the first facilities in Poland that invited dogs to support medical treatment. The Italian partners could see the hospital from the inside and visited two different wards (pediatric and rehabilitation ward). We have also made a tour around the hospital to see the environment, playgrounds for children, and two more wards under construction. Thanks to one of the doctors, we could listen to information about the hospital work. Then, the Partners observed 2 interventions.

The Italian partners observed intervention conducted by an experienced, certified therapy team. The dog- 7 years old Australian shepherd Enzo was working with elderly patients. The main goal of the intervention was to activate patients – make them more social, and motivate them to do physical exercises – walking around and standing up from the chair. After the intervention, we met with the hospital headmaster and one of the doctors – fluent Italian speakers. They showed us around the hospital, presented all the wards and areas, and answered many questions.
Fifth day
On Tuesday, we visited Mazowiecki Szpital Wojewódzki Drewnica, which is the most modern psychiatric hospital in Europe. The building and wards are brand new and nicely designed, but also the environment – a garden dedicated to patients, a patio, and a garden gazebo that make psychiatric rehabilitation easier.
